Press Release

Money raised from the Earlsdon / Chapelfields community

The local Coventry community managed to raise £5,675 from their own pockets to ensure that the 'Iqra Learning Centre' could make a difference to the lives that had been affected by the Earthquake that occured in Pakistan. Together they made generous contributions in order to purchase tents and warm items which could then be sent to the people of Kashmir and Pakistan.

Initial thoughts were that they were going to raise the money and purchase items like tents and warm blankets from the UK. However, due to the cost difference from here and Pakistan, it was decided by the management committee that by donating money to charity organisations in the UK it would be much more cost-efficient as they would have already arranged for the necessary items to be purchased, and they would also have ground teams actively helping in the affected areas.

Iqra Girls youth club raised over £280 selling snacks to residents of Oldfield, Abercorn and Allesley Old Road.

A great effort was made by the Girls Youth Club who just from the local residents in the area managed to sell snacks to raise money. They selected three roads in the local area and left leaflets with the residents, asking them to leave notes with their snack requirements. Soon after they went back to collect the requests and then they prepared the food to deliver to the residents' houses.

Local children giving up their Eid presents, so that child victims of the quake can be looked after.

The children who are also the pupils of the Iqra Learning Centre decided that they were going to give up their Eid presents and any money that they received for Eid. They understood that the people in Pakistan and Kashmir who have been affected by the earthquake did not have shelter or any warm clothing as they had lost everything. It was an important lesson for the children as it made them realise how lucky they were to have all the things which are important throughout the winter months.

Lessons from Ramadaan

The local Earlsdon community was using the lessons of Ramadaan in 2005 by helping other human beings who were suffering. During Ramadaan most Muslims fast from dawn to dusk and then pray Taraweeh at night. It was a time that most people realised how lucky they were to have shelter and heating to go back to everyday.

With the help of Ramadaan, it meant people reflected on its meaning and realised that they needed to help other people around the world.
