Coventry City Circle is a non-profit association working in and
around Coventry. Our aim is to establish a platform in the English
language for people from all faiths and no faith in and around
Coventry to explore issues relating to Islam.
In pursuit of the above we organise lectures, workshops and other
activities to bring about awareness of issues relevant to the
local community, including education, social issues, politics,
and so forth.
|
| How
long has it been running? |
| The
first programme to be run under the banner of Coventry City Circle
was a seminar on marriage which took place in June 2004. Since that
time we have run a programme every month with an additional weekend
intensive course in October. |
| What
kinds of programmes do we organise? |
| All our programmes
are in English and have an educational element. The seminars have
included topics such as The Forgotten Women of Islam, Human Rights,
Seeking Lailatul Qadr, and the Sacrifice of Abraham. Presenting
these topics we have succeeded in attracting a prestigious line
up of scholars from a wide variety of backgrounds including Abdul
Hakim Murad of Cambridge University, Shaykh Haytham Tamim of the
Utrujj Foundation, Sidi Abu Aliyah from the Jawziyyah Institute
and Shaykh Abu Bakr As-Sudani from Islamia School , London . In
less than a year attendance at our evens has risen from just 20
or 30 to over 350 at our last Eid and Charity Fundraiser. |
| What
are our Plans for the future? |
| God willing
we will be continuing the monthly programmes but now, thanks to
the steady increase in volunteers we are able to start some additional
programmes. Arabic classes have already been established, a new
youth group for girls has been set up and one for boys is in the
pipeline. Youth Activities are also offered at most of our seminars.
We are also working with other community based groups such as the
Iqra Learning Centre in Earlsdon and the Muslim Resource Centre
in Hillfields to promote other community based initiatives. |
| How
can You get involved? |
| We are always
looking for volunteers to spread the workload, and whatever your
area of interest we are sure you will find a niche. If you like
an activity and want to join in just get in touch, and if you think
we could be doing more then let us know, perhaps you could be the
coordinator of a whole new project. Remember all of us are volunteers
with busy lives of our own, what holds us together is the desire
to develop the community further through education and social programmes
and to use the blessings God has bestowed upon us, whether they
are skills, wealth, money or simply determination to improve the
society we live in. So come on! Join us in this exciting project,
we need your support. |
